In addition to my kitchen refresh with new counters and bar stools, I also purchased a new breakfast nook table. I needed a table that was very durable, regular height as well as a lighter color table to assist in the brightening up of my kitchen area. I previously had a counter height table and this just wasn't working for my 2 year old becuase it was more difficult for her to sit comfortably and safe, plus a regular height table is more intimate and cozy I think. This is not the best photo, but it is the only one I have of my old table.
My old table has been with us for a long time and never really fit into my breakfast nook as far as I was concerned. Once we moved into our home (2 years ago)....I knew this is a piece of furniture we would be replacing eventually. I chose to go with a round table and I love it! I also purchased a round rug to go underneath it. I feel my breakfast nook is much cozier now. My table and chairs are Hooker furniture, which is solid wood. It is very heavy and sturdy. I am definitely a Hook furniture fan now!
My new table has an 18 inch wide leaf that I am not currently using. It will change the table into a large oval shape. I will probably use it during special occassions. The table can seat 6 with the leaf. I love distressed furniture. This was a perfect fit for my kitchen area. To pull the table and rug together I purchased a new chandlier to go above the table. It is important to complete your room or area you are updating from top to bottom. Things to keep in mind are rugs, light fixtures, wall art and outlet covers. If you can't do it all at once, just do what you can....but before "completing" that room, make sure you look at the fine details. The small details are what can make the biggest difference sometimes.
So here is the final outcome of my breakfast nook. I still have some wall art plans before this room is complete. Of course I will share those fun updates once I get started!
Here are a couple of upclose shots of the table and chair details.
We built and purchased our home 2 years ago. One of the the areas of my home that is very important to me and makes me happy is my kitchen. We did upgrade our kitchen when we built the home to include a gas stove and 2 ovens, but the counter tops, backsplash and sink were 3 cosmetic aspects that we knew we would change later on.
We recently had our new quartz countertops put in and I lOVE them! I chose to go with quartz because they are overall more durable than granite. Because I cook A LOT and I knew I wanted very light counters, I knew it was imperative that I go with the hardest substance possible that needed the least amount of maintenance. After doing our homework, quartz was the winner! We haven't completed that backsplash yet, but we will very soon! My style is more of a warm farmhouse feel. My kitchen cabinets are dark, which I love, however because my floors are also dark....it makes for a really dark kitchen, which I do not like. My previous countertops in the picture below are laminate and dark.
Along with my countertops, we also purchased 4 new counter height stools to sit up to the island/bar. I love these as well. They are very comfortable! Anytime someone stops by, I am usually in the kitchen, so they plop down at the bar and talk to me while I cook. The new bar stools not only bring a great level of comfort, but are also very pretty! I love the nailhead design along the edges of the chair. When you enter my home and head into our great room/living room....one of the first things you see are these bar stools. The nailhaead design really makes a difference in the overall appeal to me.
When we designed our home, we had them prewire 3 areas above our island so we could eventually put up some additional lighting. I am so glad we did! I purchased these beautiful pendant lights from Lowe's online. I feel that they go perfect in our kitchen and it fits the style I am going for.
I highly suggest to wait on making changes to rooms in your home, unless you know exactly what you want and what it is going to look like. I looked and found a photo on Pinterest that best displayed the overall look I was going for and it really helped me in confirming my decisions on some of the items we chose.
As we make the additional changes, I will share them with you all!
I wanted to try some of Holan's products in my home, however light bulbs were not at the top of my list initially. After I changed out all the light bulbs in my living room/great room area...I was AMAZED! I never thought I would be so excited to share my light bulb change photos! It has truly made such a difference visiually as well as just the vibe in the room. I love love love them! Here is a before and after photo. So I recently purchased this beautiful handmade sign to go on my fireplace mantle via Amazon, but made by Schafer Art Studio.
I didn't know much about this company at all prior to ordering, I just really liked this sign. I love handmade items, especially if they are inspirational! I began to inquire a little about them and found that they really do some fabulous work! I reached out to Paige, one of the owners who responded to me immediately. She was so sweet and offered to send me one of their beautiful hand made leather journals.
This journal is beautifully made and has that wonderful leather smell! I love what this company does and what they stand for. Please Like them on Facebook (Schafer Art Studio) and check out their work. One of the other reasons I love their products, is beacuse each piece they make...they send a personal note with it. They make some great gifts for those hard to buy for people in your life. They are also on Etsy for those who want to shop! www.etsy.com/shop/SchaferArtStudio
Thank you Paige for the time and love you put into this beautiful journal!
Let me first say....I LOVE Avocados!!! You will notice many of my recipes have avocados in them somewhere. They are very good for you and filling. I love the taste of them by themselves, however if you blend them into something you can barely taste them, but it will provide a creamy texture if that is what you are going for.
Guacamole is something I could eat all day everyday! I have played around with my recipe for guacamole for a long time. I finally got the taste I like and want. Feel free to play around with this recipe to give it the exact flavor or texture you want. I hope you enjoy it!!!-Blessings!
I have had the opportunity to work with Anjou http://www.anjou.com and I absolutely love their essential oils! They were so kind to send me their Sweet Orange essential oil. It smells heavenly! There are so many uses for essential oils. I wanted to share just a few that I have had recently. Please visit their website I listed above to read more about them and their oils.
I first tried this by adding it to my coconut oil that I use as my hand and body moisturizer. I added 1 drop to an amount of oil enough for my hands and arms. I love the aroma of the sweet orange and oh how refreshing it was to smell this throughout the day.
I added several drops to my afternoon bath. As my daughter was taking her nap I enjoyed the most relaxing bath ever! It was a bit cloudy outside and it really felt like a fall/winterish day. Nothing better than a warm bath infused with Sweet Orange essential oils from Anjou! Seriously, you all must try this and give as a gift for the holidays. It really made me feel happy, relaxed and refreshed all at the same time. I do have some back tightness issues and this particular oil did seem to help with the stiffness more so than when I only have a warm water bath.
Freshening the Kitchen
I added several drops of this oil to a warm bowl of water to wipe my counters and cabinets off in my kitchen. After all the cooking I did this weekend, it really needed some freshness! The sweet orange oil was the best! It not only made it smell wonderful and clean, but it also gives you that fall/festive frangrance as well. You can use more drops for a stronger smell considering this is going on a hard surface and not your body.
So friends, I am sharing a recipe that is very special to me. This is my mom and grandmother's basic cornbread recipe. I don't think it's ever been written down or typed before. This is recipe was given to me over the phone as I made it years ago by my mom. Her mom showed her how to make it. In my family we never did stuffing (stuffing in a Thanksgiving Turkey.) We just always had "dressing" on the side. This is something my family and extended family and friends always request that I make around the holidays. My mother passed away in 2011 and my grandmother is no longer in good health to cook, so it's all on me. I am passing this to each of you. I hope you enjoy it and I hope your loved ones enjoy it! Please share it to all you think would love and appreciate it.
I want to note, that I ALWAYS use a very basic cornbread recipe for my dressing. I took a picture of the recipe I use from the back of my FAVORITE ground cornmeal, however I do elimintate the Tablespoon of sugar and I only use a cast iron skillet. (Put 2 tablespoons of oil in the skillet and place into a 425 degree oven until preheated then remove and pour it into your batter, stirring quickly. Then immediately pour batter into your skillet. It will give you that yummy sizzle sound. Place in oven until it is golden brown.) Keep in mind you do want your cornbread to rise a good bit because that will give your more cornbread. If your cornbread is too flat you may need to use 2 skillets of cornbread for this recipe. I usually add about 1/2 teaspoon more of baking powder to this recipe to ensure it rises the way I like.
This is my greatly requested fruit salad recipe. This is actually one of the few recipes from my mother. She made this my whole life, but only on Thanksgiving. I always loved it, however I never made it very often for my family....but when I do, it disappears without notice. I had a women's meeting recently and it was a huge hit! Everyone asked for the recipe, so here it is!
i am going to share my son's all time favorite meal that I make with you....yes, Chicken Pot Pie. I have shared this recipe with several of my family and friends. I actually got this receipe from a lady I use to work with. She frequently went to a bar/lounge and they were famous for their chicken pot pie. They only served it once a week and almost always sold out. She became very good friends with the owners and they shared their recipe with her. She in turn shared it with me.
It is very simple and inexpensive. I am not a huge fan of very many canned foods, however, I made an exception with this one. Of course, you can change anything canned into fresh very easily.
*Preheat oven to 350
*Take pie crusts out of packaging so they can thaw (about 20-30 mins)
I am definitely not a fan of canned meat, but it makes for a quick recipe if that's what you are looking for. Most of the time I cook my chicken for my pot pies or I pick up a rotisserie chicken at my local deli and chopped some of the chicken up to use for the pie. Whatever works best for you is the better choice.
I am a stay at home mom, wife and full time blogger. I love people and I love helping them pull out that creative side and to love who they are. I aspire to inspire and leave large footprints.
